Night eating syndrome is recognized in the DSM-5 under Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders. Its core features are consuming at least 25% of daily intake after the evening meal, or waking from sleep to eat at least twice a week, with awareness and recall of the episodes, sustained for at least three months and causing real distress.
It is uncommon. In a weighted representative sample of 2,460 German adults, a positive screen for night eating syndrome showed up in 1.1% of people, which is in line with other population estimates. Rates run higher in weight management and bariatric settings.
